LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – At least seven children were killed in California in two storms this week, bringing the state’s tally of fatalities from hurricanes this year to eight, according to the state emergency services department.

Other storm-related deaths included a 2-year-old girl who was killed by falling debris in the Oxnard area of Ventura County, and a 7-year-old girl who died after a tree toppled on her in Maricopa County, Arizona, according to the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Operations.

California has about 25 million residents, a quarter of the nation’s population.
