Photoshop Elements offers many of Photoshop’s features but focuses primarily on editing digital photos. It has many features that encourage creating and sharing creative projects. It’s priced at around $90.

Microsoft’s Paint is no longer included as an original feature of Windows. Instead Paint.NET is used. (See the section on Paint.NET at the beginning of this chapter for information about it.)

The $199 trial version of Photoshop Elements offers the full Photoshop feature set for 30 days. If you’ve been toying with a new digital camera and want to edit photos without having to buy a new one, Photoshop Elements is a good place to start. The screen shot on the next page shows how it works.

Microsoft’s Paint (both the original and the new Paint.NET) is available for the PC and Linux. A $9.95 version of the standard version of Paint.NET is available for the Mac.

Although Paint.NET is quite capable of doing most of what Photoshop Elements can do, a major advantage to Photoshop Elements is its free trial. If you have a decent-sized collection of photos, downloading the trial version for 30 days can be a bargain when compared to buying Photoshop Elements outright.

The Weather

It’s either too hot or too wet, and when it rains, the ground seems to be covered in mud. It’s not really a problem for us unless we are walking on grass paths (when we have to go barefoot) but for those of you living in sandals, you might want to reconsider. It seems like every time the sun comes out, the ground is baking. Everything is covered in pink and brown. There are no green leaves on the trees. Not this time of year. Nnooo. It’s time to go cold-weather walking again.

That being said, there are still a few of us around who are freezing. The cold weather bug bit me about a week ago, and since then, I’ve been freezing, up to my elbows in bed. I usually wear a fleece, but for some reason, I didn’t put it on this time, and now I’m regretting it. At least I don’t need to put on that ridiculous jacket I always insist on taking with me. The bug isn’t keeping me down though. We have had some lovely sunny days, so at least we’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief when spring arrives.A variety of lighting applications in commercial, industrial, and consumer markets require high brightness lighting devices that consume low power. Story BIC has been up and running for some time now. Well, let’s put it this way – I have been working on it. For one, I have been working on ways to keep the negatives in their sealed envelopes. I tried to put them in packets, but the cards had to go in the envelopes and I didn’t know if the envelopes would keep them safely. I’m not sure what was in the packets – maybe it worked, maybe not. I found some boxes that worked better, so this week I’ll go into the dumpster and dig a few out and experiment with them.

Also, I was sorting the photos. I have some that need copied and some that don’t, so I was sorting them that way.

I also have a project going that is slowly starting to produce some interesting results. We were at a restaurant last week and the owner reminded me that the combination to the lock on the door that leads outside was always hanging on the door. People never seemed to get the combination right. I asked if she would mind if I took a shot of the combination that was hanging by the door. A week later, I had a few.

That is what Story BIC is working on. I want to have a few dozen of the combination to the lock in a variety of places for people to get a feel for it. I’d like people to recognize and maybe even say the right combination. So far so good!

I left the last post with me still trying to get the photos into Story BIC. I printed out the photos, and I removed the negatives from their sealed envelopes. I stacked the photos and enclosed them in a bag. They got knocked about when I came home at the end of the day. Today I got to go to the dumpster and dig through and find a few boxes I found and the negatives are still safely in the sealed envelopes. So, it’s looking good.

So, I’m going to have a look at the photos, and then start making images of the combinations. I’m going to try to get the combinations printed on post-it notes. This will make it easier to see the combination for when I get the photos in Story BIC, so that’s a nice thing.
