Another way to convert a CMYK color image to RGB color or vice versa is to use the Photoshop Image > Adjustments > Levels. Click OK, and then, in the Layers panel, choose Edit > Convert to Grayscale and pick the mode you want.

Also, make sure that your image is not using any transparency in the Levels or Curves dialog boxes. The Curves dialog box offers a lot of control over tonal adjustments on an image, but if you have transparency, the Curves dialog box will not display properly. The Levels dialog box will, however, be able to display it accurately. Click OK, and then, in the Layers panel, choose Edit > Convert to Grayscale and pick the mode you want.

Both the Levels and Curves dialog boxes will likely be grayed out. If so, you have to turn off any transparency on the image. Here’s how:

In the Layers panel, click the arrow next to the word “Layer.” This opens a menu; in the menu, click Background, then click Clear All Transparencies. That will remove any transparency in the image. If the dialog box is grayed out, click OK and then OK again.
