Using microneurographic techniques, we studied the functional anatomy of proximal and distal limb muscles. When a forearm forearm was suddenly stretched, the hand clasped by the opposite arm was stretched (proximal reflex). If the cutaneous afferent fibers to the hand were cut, the proximal reflex elicited by sudden stretch was greatly reduced. If the afferent fibers to the forearm were cut, then both the proximal and distal reflexes were greatly reduced; the reduction was greatest for muscles located at the proximal end. The results indicate that these reflexes are mediated by the distal portion of the primary afferent nerves and the proximal portion of the secondary afferent neurons.
