In October 2010, Roblox announced a $45 million funding round, including $30 million from private investors and $15 million from Zynga. In March 2011, Roblox’s board of directors announced that it was seeking a $100 million public offering, which in the meantime increased the company’s valuation to $780 million. The $45 million funding round had been scheduled before the IPO, and Roblox’s revenues were growing at a high rate. By mid-2011, Roblox had 90 employees, 70 of whom were in the San Francisco, California office.
Roblox operated under the guise of a games platform until 2013. In 2013, the company announced that it would be joining the children’s e-sports organization e-Sports Entertainment (ESP) in a bid to expand its audience. Roblox had previously acquired a basketball themed game for ESP in 2008. The 2013 ESP Spring Championship was Roblox’s first e-sport event. Around the same time, Roblox brought on a new board of directors and was working to create new business strategies.
