History

AutoCAD was developed by Ray Ozzie, the lead architect of Lotus Development Corporation, and Steve Thomas. Development of the software began in 1979, under the name HydraCAD. After five years of development, the team released version 1 of AutoCAD in December 1982.[1]

As the number of products released by Autodesk grew, so did the number of users and potential end-users of AutoCAD. To help with this, Autodesk attempted to reach out to other software developers in the AutoCAD community. The idea behind this program was that it would make it easier to transition from other CAD software to AutoCAD.

Autodesk used the Reverse Technical Transition Program as a means of reaching out to other users of the CAD software, by means of e-mail and discussion groups. Among the objectives of the Reverse Technical Transition Program was the enhancement of the existing tools in the AutoCAD product line, as well as, the expansion of the number of end users of AutoCAD. The program was a success, and it became a profitable venture for Autodesk.[1]

In order to increase the number of potential AutoCAD users, Autodesk released a series of demos of the software. The intention was to show the AutoCAD capabilities to potential users and potential software developers. Several demo programs were released, along with the first commercial version of AutoCAD. Some of the demos were very rudimentary and featured very simple features. For instance, there was no rendering capability in the demo programs.[1]

In addition to the Reverse Technical Transition Program, Autodesk offered its product for free to students and teachers.[1]

The original version number of AutoCAD was 1. Version 3 of AutoCAD was released in 1984. This was the first version to support the Apple Macintosh, and the program was made available to students and teachers.[1]
