3D Drawing and 3D Space in AutoCAD

The AutoCAD 3D feature provides two different views: the default view (3D view), and the Orthographic view (2D view). We’ll learn the difference between the two views and how to switch between them.

Default View

The default view is the normal 3D view. You can select this view from the 3D View menu.

Orthographic View

In this view, we can see objects on the XY plane (a 2D plane). The objects are visible on the xy plane, but they don’t extend below the plane (in other words, we don’t see anything below the xy plane). If we want to see objects below the xy plane, we can switch to a 3D view.

We can use AutoCAD to draw in the X-Y and XYZ spaces. AutoCAD refers to these three spaces as 3D space. Let’s see how to draw in these spaces in the XYZ space.

To work with the 3D drawings and objects in AutoCAD, we need to work with the 3D space. The 3D space is different than the 2D space that we use for working in plan view. The 3D space is three dimensional. We can’t draw directly on the 2D space.

In the 2D space, we can draw lines, circles, rectangles, and polygons. In the 3D space, we can’t draw lines. We can create lines by connecting two points with the LINE command. To draw lines, we’ll use the option command.

To draw circles, we’ll use the ARC command. To draw rectangles, we’ll use the BOX command. To draw polygon, we’ll use the POLY command.
