In a move aimed at appealing to potential coffee snobs, Starbucks is branding its k-cups with pictures and the names of the roasters that grow them. “Well done. Your coffee is good,” says a sign that advertises the coffee in a k-cup, according to a sample sent by Starbucks to The New York Times.
Some small roasters resent Starbucks’ efforts to brand their coffee.
“It’s one thing for Starbucks to try to muscle their way into the coffee game,” said the owner of Coffee Works in Santa Monica, who asked not to be identified. “But it’s another thing to take the approach they are. I think they’re taking advantage of us.”
Coffee prices on the wholesale market are at their lowest in more than 30 years. Starbucks plans to sell its branded k-cups for $3.49 this year, compared with $3.29 for other private-label brands, according to an internal memo sent to store managers and obtained by The Times.
Starbucks said in a statement that the “best beans from the U.S. and around the world are the foundation of the Starbucks brand.”
“We believe that American coffee, crafted with the highest-quality ingredients, should have the highest-quality label,” Starbucks said.
