In this study we used a non-invasive technique to stimulate the amygdala in order to investigate whether this structure can enhance the control of behavior in a situation where goal-directed action has to be selected in the face of conflicting contextual factors. Twenty-four healthy volunteers were stimulated on one side of the forehead for three 10-min periods, each 10-20 min apart, during which they were asked to drive a car either to the left or to the right of a constant centre on a road without any curbs or other obstructions. Of the 24 subjects, 12 drove to the right, 12 to the left. Stimulation was administered in 10 subjects during the course of a sham procedure (control condition), in 12 subjects when the right amygdala was in a state of heightened activity (amygdala stimulation condition), and in 12 subjects when the left amygdala was in a state of heightened activity (left amygdala stimulation condition). The time spent in control of the vehicle was significantly increased during the amygdala stimulation conditions compared with the sham condition, but no significant effects were found on the control of the vehicle during the two amygdala stimulation conditions.
