This video tutorial is geared toward the advanced AutoCAD user, but any version of AutoCAD can be used to follow along with the tutorial. We assume that you are familiar with AutoCAD basics and are starting a new drawing.

Importing

Step 1: You begin with a simple sketch on the top of a white sheet of paper.

Step 2: Press Enter on your keyboard, and you return to the Home tab.

Step 3: In the Drawing Utilities panel, you click on the File menu, and click on Open.

Step 4: In the Open dialog box, you navigate to a folder containing the DXF file that you plan to import, select the DXF file, and click Open. You can navigate to the file by double-clicking on the file, or using the Open Recent Files folder and selecting the DXF file.

Step 5: You see a preview of the DXF file on the screen.

Step 6: You select Import DXF with Overlapping Polygons, click OK, and then click on the Home tab.

Step 7: You return to the Home tab, and in the Drawing Utilities panel, you click on the Add Geometry button.

Step 8: You see a list of geometry to add to your drawing.

Step 9: You click on Add Entities, and the entities appear on your screen, with their entities.

Step 10: You see a preview of the entities in the list, with its Entity Type.

Step 11: You select one entity, and click OK, and then click on the Home tab.

Step 12: You return to the Home tab.

Step 13: In the Drawing Utilities panel, you click on the Fillet button.

Step 14: You see a preview of the Entities list.

Step 15: You select Fillet, and click OK, and then click on the Home tab.

Step 16: You return to the Home tab.

Step 17: In the Drawing Utilities panel, you click on the Add Geometry button.

Step 18: You see a list of geometry.

Step 19: You select Add to Selection, and click OK.

The Import and Markup Assist feature allows you to receive feedback on your drawings. Using the same technology as CAD export, you can import comments and highlight changes. You can use this feature to send and incorporate feedback from printed paper or PDFs and add comments to your drawings automatically, without additional drawing steps.

The AutoCAD Export technology is also supported by import from Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF.

By default, the Import and Markup Assist feature is turned off. If you turn it on, you are no longer able to export from drawing objects. For more information about exporting drawings, see AutoCAD Export.

The Import and Markup Assist feature works best with objects that have a single property. Objects with more than one property, such as lines and text, cannot be imported. AutoCAD 2023 features a new numbering system. The new numbering system is designed to simplify the method of referencing your drawings. For example, a “b” on your drawing sheet is now equivalent to a “1” in the drawing table.

As a result, object changes, such as moving or copying, will be tagged with an “a”, “b”, etc. that identifies which object was the previous or current object. This simplifies reference. AutoCAD 2023 no longer supports the “#” referencing scheme (which includes both numbers and letters). The “#” reference was replaced by the new “a”, “b”, etc. scheme.

You can still reference objects using the “#” referencing scheme. However, you can only access “#” references from within the drawing.
