The three volunteers who died while trying to rescue victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas had “heroic” deaths, according to emergency dispatchers who dispatched the first crews to the flooded Houston area.

The three men, who had volunteered with non-profit Urban Search and Rescue Texas Task Force 1, were going to a hospital as part of the rescue effort in Houston, according to the Task Force 1 website, but they went missing after their boat went down near the Mission Bend detention facility.

“They went in the water trying to save some folks,” said David McHone, a 911 dispatcher for Harris County Emergency Management. “They were heroes.”

Houston Police Department Officer Ed Smith told NBC News that the men were boating on the Buffalo Bayou near King’s Island, where some of the cars got stuck in floodwaters. When the men got into the bayou and met some people trying to get out, they joined the rescue effort, according to Smith.

“They started going back to rescue folks,” Smith said. “I don’t know the extent of their injuries.”

David Aranda, a spokesman for the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office, said the men were assigned to go to the hospital for “medical check up and probably some mental health issues.” Aranda did not comment on whether the men had suicidal intentions or were suicidal.

Rick McGehee, President of Texas Task Force 1, told NBC News on Friday that as the men were taking an injured woman to a hospital, they did not know that their boat was leaking water.

“They had no idea,” he said.

The incident happened about 7 a.m. on Thursday when their boat got stuck in floodwaters near Mission Bend and King’s Island and the men couldn’t make it back.

“We had no food, no water, no radio and were hoping for help,” said McGehee, who has been volunteering for 16 years. “It was a crazy situation.”
