Arithmetic operations on floating numbers in Python

So I know that Python 3.x doesn’t support decimal floating point like it does in R or Matlab.
I’m interested in why Python (2.7.x) can’t do basic operations like “5 + 5.5” and “12 / 3” and why “12.0 / 3” would give an error like “RuntimeError: could not convert string to float: 12.0” whereas “12 / 3.0” gives me the right answer?
It almost seems like the float object is just looking at the string and making a basic math operation on it?

Python 2 will attempt to parse a string in to a floating point number, however there is no way to guarantee that this works. For example if you pass 2.7 to float() it will convert “2.7” to 0. I’d also recommend checking out the str.split method, this will parse the string based on digits and decimal points.
