The two main characters, Johnny Blazes (Wallace Beery) and Tessie Foster (Loretta Young), dream of a life away from the docks. The film, which is based on the play by Jack Yellen, stars Wallace Beery, Loretta Young, William Frawley, and Julia Dean.

The play upon which the film was based was critically praised and as a result, The film was released in 1932. However, it was not a financial success, and Warner Bros. nearly set the production up to be another smash hit. After an initial release run, Warner Bros. re-released Rotten Tide in 1983 in an attempt to bring it to the forefront of the memories of the audience. The film was then distributed again in theaters in 2010.

Plot
In the 1920s in the fictional New York area, Wally Flynn (Wallace Beery) hires Tessie Foster (Loretta Young) to be his secretary. Wally needs Tessie around to help him supervise the workforce. However, Wally is too much of a gentleman to mention anything to Tessie that might make her think that Wally is not interested in her “romance.” His feelings are all on paper, and he dutifully sends her flowers, cards, and gifts as well as entertaining her at the home that he rents for her. Wally holds her in high regard, and in a similar way with Johnny Blazes (Hal Chester), which is evident in an incident that follows.

Johnny Blazes is a dock worker. Although, he has heard from Tessie that she is looking for a good husband that understands her, Johnny is determined to be the one and when Wally asks him if he has anyone special in mind, he only mentions Tessie. This attracts Wally and the two of them begin spending time together. One day, Tessie approaches Wally and the two become friends. After Tessie confesses to Wally that she wants a baby, and has informed Johnny that she wants him to marry her, Wally tells Johnny. However, it is too late for Johnny, he is smitten and goes ahead and marries her. Wally is hurt and becomes furious
