mega�In the first part of this two-part series, we learned how to create a socket-based service that exposes a REST endpoint via a socket and that it is created using bind(), listen() and accept(). The service in this second tutorial example only listens on one interface and takes messages from clients on that interface.

This brings us to scenario 3: A server exposes a socket-based endpoint, but is not listening on one specific interface.

Normally we would look at an example of an endpoint listening on an interface and then look at a way to move that endpoint from listening on one interface to listening on multiple interfaces. However, the scenario we are looking at here is a bit different and has nothing to do with the interface. Rather, we want to see how to discover an endpoint with no interface.

3.1 Create the Server

In this part of the series, we will look at how to create a server that does not listen on any particular interface. The server in this example is listening for connections from any client on any interface.

By default, sockets are bound to an interface. This is the interface on which the program listens. In this example, the program listens on all interfaces.

In this example, we use UNIX domain socket connections. The port number in an UNIX socket connection is fixed at the time the socket is created.

A host-based address can also be specified in an UNIX socket connection. In this example, we specify a hostname to which the socket should bind. The address-family specification is mandatory here, although it can be omitted. By default, the address family is IPv4. The address specification is a parameter to the bind() function. The sockaddr_un structure contains the hostname to which the socket connects. If we add the UNIX_PATHNAME_LEN value to the address parameter, we can specify a hostname that has embedded slashes (e.g., “/dev/socket”) in it. The value to pass to the address parameter must be a sockaddr_un, which is a structure containing a hostname and a path name. The path name in the address structure does not include embedded slashes. The path name in this example is simply “/tmp/”.
