During the late 19th century, there was a very strong emphasis on education and social development in Switzerland and there was a great demand for graduates with academic qualifications and unique practical skills. The Swiss Army started the Swiss Engineer School (founded 1867) and the Swiss Military School in 1884, as well as the Junior College of Engineers in Zurich (founded in 1887). The Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences was founded in 1898 and a similar organization was founded in France, in 1889. The Swiss engineering schools were the first to be computerized and were very innovative, both in curriculum and in research methods. The era of the general and individual academies of engineering sciences is characterized by constant and continuous innovation of educational policies and practices. The teaching methods used in the universities today are based on the Swiss system, which heavily relies on manuals and teaching aids.The training of engineers and technicians in Switzerland is rather oriented towards training in specific domain-knowledge, with only some of the graduates being oriented towards solving real problems. However, most importantly, the combination of education and problem-solving skills is considered to be the most important feature of engineers and technicians. Good problem-solving skills are the fundamental basis for excellence in engineering. The Swiss engineer and engineer  comparison: In Switzerland, there are four engineering disciplines on the national list, as in many other countries: civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering. The Civil engineering is the largest discipline, as it includes all engineers in general. According to the 2005 census, the total population of engineers in Switzerland was about . Electrical engineers are by far the largest group in the Swiss civil engineering, but their number is increasing steadily. The number of chemical engineers is much lower but they are growing rapidly due to the demand for engineers in the modern chemistry industry. The domain-specific expertise of the engineers is very rich. Civil engineers have broad skills in all engineering disciplines that are relevant to civil engineering. They include mechanical engineers, architects, pharmacists, economists, chemists, and so on. In addition, they are taught many skills and disciplines that are not specific to civil engineering, including but not limited to: mathematics, physics, economics, sociology, psychology, and general computer programming. Many of the engineers have a broad education in all fields of engineering. For example, electrical engineers in the United States can be defined as persons with a knowledge of electronics, electromagnetism, and electrical machines, and can have a very broad education in electrical engineering, including courses
