Sonic awakens from the nightmare of Oblivion to discover that the year is 2102. Young Sonic awakens in an enemy fortress. There, he discovers his friend Tails, an artificially intelligent anthropomorphic cat. Soon, though, an army of vampires overrun the fortress and begin to ravage the city. Somehow, Sonic manages to escape, and hides in a subway. There, he encounters a mysterious man named Lance. Lance and Sonic enter a complex underground network of tunnels where Sonic learns of a plot by the vampires to create an army of creatures called “Menos” and invade civilization. Sonic determines to destroy the Menos and discovers that he has an enhanced healing factor. Unfortunately, Tails must be sacrificed to awaken the Menos’ dormant powers, but Sonic manages to injure them and kill Lance. Sonic destroys the Menos, but discovers that the city is now controlled by the vampires. As a kill command is issued, Sonic ventures into a trap prepared by the vampires and becomes bitten. He begins to regain his memories of Morrow, a city from the past, despite the vampire’s protests. In Morrow, the vampires’ true form has been revealed to be the final stage of bloodsucking. Upon finding Morrow, Sonic emerges from his stasis and awakens into a futuristic world where Morrow has vanished. Sonic is given the ability to transform into a super-human, Robocop-like being, similar to his first incarnation. Also, while in Morrow, Sonic learns that his mother was once a vampire, and that her other child, Murray, is now the new leader of the vampires.
