History

1986. AutoCAD version 1.1 was released. This version was the first AutoCAD to have a raster image display, an ability to preview changes to existing 3-D models, and the ability to save files to the Windows file system instead of to AutoCAD’s own format.
1987. The new name of AutoCAD was officially adopted.
1988. The Arc engineering library was rewritten in C++, as the new version of AutoCAD, which was now based on ARC. This allowed the software to be much faster and provided a consistent interface across all platforms.
1990. AutoCAD 2 was released, with a new file format called DXF. This is the file format used by the majority of CAD software today.
1991. AutoCAD 3 was released, with several new features and substantial enhancements to the existing products. The earlier AutoCAD RTC was renamed AutoCAD LT. The user interface was redesigned to use windows and frames rather than a viewport.
