Department of Health secretary Belle Frew said while the majority of children exposed to mercury were exposed from consuming fish, the potential for mercury poisoning was a major concern.

“People generally don’t think of food as a hazard,” she said.

“But in this case, salt is not something most people think of as a hazard, but it is potentially hazardous for a child.”
