That’s what Gary Smith said in “Golfmyths,” a book he edited and published in 1974.

Smith is a gruff outdoor writer, not a writer of golf books. He was often at odds with the distinguished golf writer of the late 1950s and 1960s, James Cash Wise, as Cash was an advocate of human-golfer love and harmony. Cash thought that Gary was too negative.

In his introduction, Cash calls Gary “a strong man, teeming with energy and ideas.” Cash also said he was a “cranky old coot, a frustrated kind of guy.”

I liked them both and I think that golf, as a game, has changed and continues to change. Gary Smith, who died 30 years ago, may have anticipated a future where the United States Golf Association would reject the USGA’s claim that it could proclaim independence. Former USGA President Howie McCormick, who gave up the game after business dealings with the now defunct Sunshine Securities, wrote a book, “What Went Wrong at the USGA and How it Can Be Fixed,” three years before McCullough and Wood.

But no one thought then that an independent USGA would be so successful. The agreement became binding and the USGA has been the de facto authority on the game ever since. That is, until Woods and the PGA of America flexed their muscles and the big money gained too much and broke into two camps – the anti-USGA camp and the Big Business arm of the USGA.
