Twelve (15.8%) of the horses treated with CCOT survived the 30-day follow-up compared with five (27.8%) of the controls. Horses treated with CCOT had significantly better 30-day neurological scores (mean = 2.4 [SD = 1.2], n = 36) than did controls (mean = 4.3 [SD = 1.3], n = 17, P < 0.001). Survival was not associated with neurological status. Cerebral venous oxygen saturation was significantly higher in horses treated with CCOT than in controls at 24 and 48 h post-injury. A significantly higher risk of intracranial hypertension was associated with cerebral venous oxygen saturation levels below 15%
