What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is an infection that affects the tissues that support the teeth. Because it affects the structures that hold the teeth in place, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss. The gum disease is periodontitis.

When it causes tissue inflammation to occur, the inflammation of these structures, called periodontal tissues, may begin to damage the teeth, as well as the supporting tissues around the teeth and the gums.

What causes periodontitis?

Periodontitis is caused by a gum disease, called periodontitis, which can result from having an unhealthy or uneven bacterial plaque, usually called dental plaque, that collects on the surface of your teeth and on the gums. This plaque may change before it can be cleaned, leaving some bacteria to build up and stick to the teeth.

Bacteria from plaque harbor the first step in tooth decay because they cause the formation of mutans streptococci, a kind of bacteria. Once mutans streptococci are on your teeth, they feed on the sugar in your teeth’s structure, which causes decay.
