Asda has announced the launch of its own brand of Reduced-Fat Cheddar Cheese Cheese.

The new product, available in the supermarket chain’s standard ranges, is described as “a Cheddar cheese that melts, melts and melts, with fewer calories, less fat and fewer calories per 100g”.

While the new cheese may contain fewer calories, it will still contain the same amount of protein as regular Cheddar.

The new cheese is partly the result of consumer research carried out by Asda that found shoppers wanted a healthier alternative to cheese.

The brand was launched at the supermarket chain’s annual awards night last week, at which founder Sir Terry Leahy awarded its youngest employee a certificate as one of 50 winners.

Asda currently sells an own brand of reduced fat Cheese, Cadbury’s Reduced Fat Chocolate Cream Cheese, which contains 40% less fat than regular Cheddar.

The reduced fat cheese is made using the same processes as its normal range and is sold in the same packs, boxes and wrapper, but with a label explaining that it contains slightly less fat.

Asda Cheese Product Lead, Niki Fuller said: “We have listened to our customers, who are always leading the way when it comes to ‘simple is best’, and have taken it upon ourselves to offer a healthier alternative to the cheese market.

“The cheese also delivers taste and texture, making it a great alternative to more traditional reduced fat cheeses.

“It’s a step forward in the launch of the new Asda brand, and the launch of our new range of ‘Do the Even Better’ meals.”

Asda is also trialling the launch of a ‘Do the Even Better’ range of snacks, including cheese and crackers.
