Sql Server: Primary Key on table containing 1 million records
I have a table with 1,00,000,000 records in it, and a primary key. The table will be pretty static in that there will be absolutely no deletes.
I have been told that using foreign key constraints are a bad idea, and that the primary key should contain a unique data of some sort.
I honestly don’t know what to do.
I know that primary keys are not supposed to change, but 1,00,000,000 records wouldn’t even fit on a single table. So the values will inevitably change.
At the same time, a unique ID is automatically generated whenever a new row is inserted, and it would seem that each inserted row had its own identity. Would I be better off just design my primary key as a short integer without any data?
I don’t have the resources to use the PostgreSQL database however, otherwise I might have thought about it.

I don’t see a problem with having a primary key on table containing a million records. Something to keep in mind is how the PK is generated, if it’s generated using identity column then it will become huge (logically). If it’s auto increment then you don’t have to manually create a trigger for insert, no matter how much rows are there.
