The way it works is that when you attack/hit/get hit, you go into a failed state. When you are in a failed state, your stats will be low, but so will the stats of your opponent. For every attack you do, you go into a failed state. So if you attack your opponent and you hit them, they go into a failed state. If you then hit them again, they will go into a failed state twice. If they hit you again, you will go into a failed state three times. If you hit them a fourth time, they go into a failed state four times. If you hit them a fifth time, they go into a failed state five times. And so on.

After a certain number of hits in one of these failed states, you are able to be brought back from the failed state, but only the main character can do this. You go into this failed state and lose all your stamina, and you are not able to be brought back from this failed state if another character hits you until your entire party members have been KOed.
