We had an RDBMS design that was performed in house by a consulting company.

The specs were as follows:

The design was done for 8 people, 40,000 queries, 25% update and 75% select (all with range queries) from a small OLTP system where end users only logged into a system once per day to
manage over 10,000,000 people.

The queries were to be run in parallel on 4 separate cores, data was on a local drive.

The consulting company figured out that the design was too complex and gave us the suggestion that we scale it out by splitting the database into multiple SQL instances. There was no mention of the licensing implications.

We ended up deciding to roll our own design instead.

I’m going to post the results from some of the tests we ran. First let me state that I had very limited experience with SQL.

Test Parameters:

I ran it with several combinations of data and selected nodes. This helped me determine the “sweet spot” of the SQL framework.

Our constraints were as follows:

Only one server (the master) with two nodes each.

Each server ran two instances of SQL (base and max) with a round robin scheduling technique.

All data was copied over to the server with the instance of SQL.
