See, the bullshit rhetoric about games “not being fun” stopped being effective a long time ago, and it wouldn’t be right to try and win back those consumers with more bullshit like that. But FIFA has real problems that aren’t going away.

It starts with FIFA’s one major component that’s really the engine powering the whole game — licensed players, clubs, and stadiums. It’s a nearly ubiquitous gaming element, but the results are wildly inconsistent, and I can’t think of any other game where that element is consistently the biggest problem.

One reason I’m against classifying FIFA as a sports game is because it’s not how professional football works. That’s why we need to be very careful with how we talk about FIFA, because there are real people at the top of the game, and you don’t just find the solution to some aikido problem when you go in and squash your opponent’s knees — it can be hugely damaging, and I’m not sure FIFA knows any better.

It’s like trading card games in the sense that you can have great visuals and highly-detailed environments, and you can make a game that feels like a sports game and actually have the right players and in the right places, and still have the ratings and scores and all the standardising of the game.
