Layers are the fundamental unit of Photoshop. You add them and move them around to create great effects. You can apply effects or edits to individual layers, or you can create a selection of objects and apply an effect to the selection. The layer you use to select and manipulate objects in a photo acts like a template for the rest of the layers.
When you’re editing a photo, the first step is usually to create a new empty layer. You can add a layer, but it usually adds the work to a master layer. If you have too many layers to work with, you can create a group of layers that you can apply as one. See Book III, Chapter 4 for more on the tools you use to create and modify layers.
Adobe offers free ad-supported 30-day trials of Photoshop, as well as free 30-day trials of other applications in the Creative Suite (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Acrobat). You can also take advantage of the online Photoshop resources at www.photoshop.com.
While many of the processes you need to master the ways of Photoshop are already built into other programs (such as the actions built into Photoshop Elements or the handy painting tools in Adobe Illustrator), and you can find many excellent online tutorials for both, I’ve chosen to begin with the fundamentals of Photoshop in this book. While you can use these methods in conjunction with other programs, in my opinion, Photoshop offers far more versatility.
Photoshop includes many tools, ranging from color correction tools, to complete photo retouching and image-editing tools. You can also enhance images using special effects such as drawing and painting. For even more information on Photoshop, check out Book I, Chapter 1.
What You Can Do with a Photo
When you open a photo file in Photoshop, you’re not usually dealing with a complete image — that’s only the case when you use Photoshop Elements to edit a RAW file. When a photo is open in Photoshop, you typically have access to a number of basic tools.
Following is a list of the basic tools that you have access to when opening a file in Photoshop.
• Adjustment layers: You can add various adjustments to an image. Adjustment layers can be either layer or adjustment masks. Figure 4-1 shows the Adjustment layers menu. There are tons of adjustments to choose from, ranging from color adjustments to image adjustments.

Photoshop is the most used, and most powerful, photo editing software on the planet. While we all like to spend hours in the comfort of our own homes editing and retouching photos, Adobe Photoshop is typically the tool of choice for those professional photographers, graphic designers, web designers and even Discord emoji creators. However, it’s designed for professional use. Most people who use Photoshop will be doing so for work and not for their own enjoyment. To edit or make something fun or entertaining, you’d want a tool that is easier to use and a good bit less expensive. Photoshop is not that tool, but the suite of tools that come bundled with it are. For this reason, Adobe Photoshop Elements is a very popular free alternative to Photoshop.
How to Use Photoshop Elements
Starting out with a free version of Photoshop can be confusing when you’re a beginner. There are so many things you’ll want to try and see how they work in Photoshop and it can be tough to pick which things to try first.
Adobe Photoshop Elements comes with a fairly robust feature set that’s similar to a professional version of Photoshop. It’s missing a few features that professional Photoshop users are used to, but for free software users or hobbyists or even those just wanting to trim or crop up their images, it’s a pretty solid tool.
When you open Photoshop Elements, it looks like any other piece of software you’d expect. You’ll see a big file and small file icon, for example. Clicking those icons will take you to the respective files.

The government’s plan to create a three-pronged, tax-free savings plan — through the Canada Savings Plan (CSP), Child Tax Benefit and Universal Childcare Benefit — is three years too late, author and lawyer Kerri Judd argues.
After a 15-year post-secondary education, the CSP will offer parents the choice of a tax-free savings account, a registered retirement savings plan or a new, currently ill-defined minimum savings plan.
But, Judd argues, the plan is structured in a way that fails to fulfill the government’s own goal of “putting kids first.”
“If we do it as planned, there will be people saving for their child tax benefit cheque and saving for their Canada Savings Plan, but not saving because they don’t want to put money into a registered retirement savings plan,” says Judd, speaking at the Wealth Advisory in Toronto.
