Chemists at King’s College London, have developed a chemical process that could make it possible to fix a broken ozone layer over Antarctica into a viable income stream for the Antarctic region. The end result could be a lucrative new source of income for regions that need it most, and help mitigate the threat of ozone depletion in the future.
A new study published today in the peer-reviewed scientific journal PNAS details how the team has developed a chemical process which could be used to’repair’ the protective ozone layer in a manner that would be far more economical than the current ozone-destroying methods. It also explains how the projected investments to achieve this could be undertaken in low-cost and resource-rich countries.
Ozone, the protective gas that protects our planet from damaging ultraviolet (UV) light, is found in concentrations of more than 20 parts per trillion (ppt) in the stratosphere, the upper most layer of the atmosphere. The discovery of widespread ozone depletion in the upper stratosphere in the 1980s marked a turning point in the environment.
Despite its importance to humans, ozone is extremely volatile and is destroyed by UV light. When ozone atoms are split by solar UV light, it produces chlorine atoms. The chlorine atoms then circulate around the stratosphere, combining with other ozone atoms into chlorine monoxide molecules. This then converts back into chlorine atoms, and the cycle continues. In the process, chlorine atoms are converted from a ‘bad’ to a ‘good’ molecule. Scientists estimate that human activity is now responsible for around 25-30% of chlorine atoms reaching the stratosphere, due to unplanned release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) used in refrigerators, air conditioners and manufacturing.
The ozone layer shields us from 90% of the UV that causes skin cancers, and is essential to the health of plant life. Lower levels of ozone also affect animal life, causing skin damage in livestock and seagulls migrating over the Antarctic to lay their eggs. Lower levels of ozone also cause damage to our DNA and is thought to cause up to 1.5m premature deaths per year.
