## Photoshop Layers
A _layer_ is Photoshop’s basic editing tool and its most powerful and useful feature. Photoshop layers allow you to work on just a small portion of a photograph, and then you can work on other parts later. The original image (also called the _host layer_ ) remains unchanged; only the edits you make to the layer appear on the image.
A _mask_ is a specific type of layer; a mask is visible as a black-and-white area of the layer that’s turned opaque. (You can also use a Layer Mask to create the effect of transparency.) When you mask an image, any changes you make to the pixels in the masked area appear on the image only where the mask is on top of the image. Only the areas covered by the mask’s edges are visible.
By default, the mask is opaque, but you can make the mask partially transparent by choosing Layer → Blending Options → Transparency.
# Photoshop Layers: The Basics
A _layer_ is the basis of Photoshop’s nondestructive editing. You create a new layer by either selecting the Background Layer, or choosing Layer → New Layer. To make an object appear on the new layer, choose Layer → New Layer → From Similar. If you want to merge several layers into one, select the layers you want to combine, and choose Layer → Merge Down. In order to affect the background, however, you need to select the Background Layer.

We report on the fabrication of a nanostructured gold film, and study its influence on the photonic characteristics of dye-doped polymer nanoparticles (polymer NPs). Metal-dielectric interfaces at the excitation of the localized surface plasmon (LSP) provide the coupling to the free space modes. As a result, novel aspects such as enhanced light absorption, large surface area and Raman scattering are observed. We quantify the influence of these aspects on the optical characteristics of dye-doped NPs using a simplified 3D model. We show that, in contrast to the one-dimensional Bragg reflector made of NPs, the nanostructured film can be designed to have an optimum combination of free space modes, LSP resonances and dye-doped polymer NPs. Further, we show that the LSP resonances give rise to an increment in the Raman scattering of dye-doped NPs, thus indicating a pathway to the development of new Raman probes and biosensors using NPs.Note: The first production Panavision H.264/MPEG-4 AVC encoder was released in June 2005; this test release is based on the very latest code provided by Khronos and is supported on only a limited number of platforms.
