## Producing Photographs
The first step to creating a quality digital image is to start with a high-resolution, true-color photograph. The following is a general procedure for shooting photographs for a document.
1. **Choose the right camera for the job.**
Consider your needs as well as the capabilities of the camera you have. If you need to shoot in low light, you may want to buy a brighter camera; if you like to take pictures of your family in real life, a small camera is probably more practical than one that’s too large to carry around.
2. **Set the camera to Manual mode.**

In Manual mode, use the shutter speed and aperture to control shutter speed, the depth of field, and the amount of light entering the camera.

Usually, you can choose the ISO sensitivity of most digital cameras to adapt to the light conditions. If you’re photographing in low light, increase the ISO, as explained in the next section.
In some cameras you can set the ISO based on the mode you’ve selected. If you select the Shutter priority or Manual mode and set the ISO to a low ISO setting, the camera will automatically select a faster shutter speed to compensate for a lower ambient light. The average camera, with a low shutter speed setting, provides a high-quality image in very low light, but it can result in a blurier image if the shutter speed is set to take pictures at a lower ISO setting.
If you’re photographing in bright sunlight, you may want to lower the ISO, which reduces noise. Avoid using the Auto ISO function, which can lead to overexposure of the image. (Chapter 5 explains ISO settings in more detail.)
