(2005) The KZO model is an “instantaneous” fracture model, which assumes a steady-state situation for the groundwater level with a constant permeability. This model is useful for simulation work, but has not been validated experimentally. An upper boundary condition for the simulation of groundwater flow around a rupture event was previously unavailable for the KZO model. Recently, a KZO type model was derived for 2-D groundwater flow simulations with a dynamic lower boundary. The KZO model, with an appropriate lower boundary, could be used for simulation of an actual rupture event. In this paper, a validation of the KZO model is given. The KZO model was tested with two different rupture events. Experiments were performed in a two-dimensional fracture test section in laboratory experiments. The fractures caused by the experiments had the same geometry, but different permeability. Also, a permeability of 3.5 µm diameter drill hole was used in the experiments. Hence, different fracture permeabilities were simulated in the experiments. Another two-dimensional shallow fracture with a permeability of about 8 µm diameter drill hole was also used in these experiments. These two-dimensional fracture test sections were embedded into a test section, which has a similar fracture geometry as the case study described in a previous publication. A KZO type model was used in the simulations. The time history of the quantity of water which drained from the fracture test sections with a different permeability was analysed in the simulation. The results were compared with the experimental results. The comparison showed that the KZO model predicted the time course of the quantity of water drained from the fracture test sections.
