A ribbon is a feature that is popular in Microsoft Office programs.
A ribbon has many uses. This includes navigation bars, menus, toolbars, gizmos, etc. In certain Office products such as Microsoft Office Excel, the ribbon is also used as a main user interface.
The main interface element of Microsoft Excel is the Ribbon. Microsoft defines the ribbon as “a tabbed user interface for workbooks in which selected features of the interface can be customized.”
A good example of using a ribbon is a tabbed navigation bar which lets you quickly switch between workbook tabs. However, the Ribbon has many more uses and we would be hard-pressed to count all the ways that you can use a Ribbon.

History of the Ribbon
Microsoft Office introduced the Ribbon in Office 2007, but this concept was first introduced in MSN Explorer. In 2000, Microsoft released a web browser that offered an “out-of-the-box” experience similar to that of Internet Explorer. One of the features of that web browser was a tabbed interface, which has become the standard way to organize user interface elements. A tabbed interface was first introduced in the early web browsers as Netscape Navigator and was later adopted by Firefox and Safari.
MSN Explorer provided a tabbed interface. The tabs let users navigate between different content, including a “Favorites” tab that allowed users to browse their favorite sites. This model is similar to the old Menu Bar that was included in early web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.
By this time, the design of the web browser had been heavily influenced by the graphical look of Windows 95. This led to the development of tabbed browsers, which were easier to navigate and provided the same level of functionality that the Windows 95 GUI browser had. It also set the standard for what tabbed user interfaces should look like.
In Office 2007, Microsoft decided to use a tabbed design to organize the user interface. The user interface layout in Office 2007 was based on the Windows 2000-style Office. However, the Office 2007 interface was designed to be more easily accessible than the previous Office versions.
Office 2007 introduced a new main interface element, the Ribbon. The Ribbon was first introduced as a way to provide a more “clean” interface that didn’t feature as many menus and toolbars.
