Deutsche Bank has rejected calls from members of the public for compensation to be paid after a fire at its headquarters in Plymouth.

Firefighters were called to the bank’s Quayside building at 08:37 GMT on Friday.

Plymouth City Council’s leader Councillor Anthony Brown said the event’s scale made it unique.

He added: “There’s no place, at least in my opinion, in terms of the scale of loss and the consequences for people, that this action is permitted to happen.”

Fire service spokesman Chris Hylton said the loss was “substantial”.

Mr Brown said the City Council had also been contacted by several of the city’s jewellers whose stores suffered fire damage
