We have seen hundreds of registrants from every corner of the world. We have seen over 1000 people sign up for the online registration portal and we have a fairly good idea of where the global population of hackers stands. For my post, I will be looking at how the data from the online registration portal is structured and what tools can be used to help model the data.

The first thing I wanted to do was to figure out how to get the data. I was pretty sure that the data was structured like this, but I wanted to confirm my thoughts. I spent about an hour trying to figure out how to get at the data. While the data is public, you have to create an account and prove your legitimacy. Then you have to fill out a bunch of forms with the non-required data you want. I even asked the organizers of the event for their permission to just download the data. But they just wouldn’t let me. I should note that the organizers also have access to the data. This leads me to think that the data is likely structured in a way that is suitable for common analytics tools.

So what can we do with the data? There are two main tools that I am using. First, R. R is a general purpose programming language that is used for statistics and data mining. This means that it is well suited for a wide range of data analysis. R is also pretty good at manipulating and analyzing tabular data. Using R, you can easily generate a summary of the raw data by sampling, computing a single statistic, transforming the data, creating charts, etc. The second tool I am using is Tableau. Tableau is a data visualization tool that is built on top of R. This means that you can do a whole range of common analytics in Tableau and then export the results back to R for further analysis and exploration.
