I’m fairly new to react and I’m trying to wrap my head around useEffect.
I have an API call that I want to call every 15 seconds, but keep running into CSRF tokens on the network. I’m trying to get around this by updating the csrf token in local storage. I then think I should be able to call the API without a problem, right?
What I’ve been trying to get working is:
My API calls useEffect only if the csrf is 1, so it should be called each time the csrf is updated.
const [csrf, setCSRF] = useState(0);
useEffect(() => {
if(csrf === 1) {
setCSRF(0);
refresh();
}
}, []);
When I call the API without the useEffect, I get this error:
Expected an assignment or function call and instead saw an expression [500]

Effect Hooks in React are executed synchronously when first created.
While you can use hooks like useState or useEffect with a default
value like the empty array above, it’s usually more convenient to
write stateless functions (or classes with state) with a single value
to represent “empty.”
Consider this example:

This is the same as writing const [count, setCount] = useState(0);
const [itemCount, setItemCount] = useState(0);
