Still another year, another sequel. The original Carrier Command was a game of speed and strategy. It was a game very few people actually played. The original Carrier Command was one of those games that has never been available for the X-box so I’m glad Microprose is bringing it to the Gamecube as this time around the Commander has the support of a WW2 theme.

The original game was set up like a real war. You took command of a ship and had to figure out where and when you should hit your enemies. You were given certain missions that had a deadline, the more that you got done the better the game. You had certain ships and weapons and you would have to use the best strategy to get your enemy knocked out.

The game has a number of units. You have regular battleships, Carrier ships, Torpedo bombers, Subs, Mines, Cruisers and Destroyers. You will need to use these ships in a number of roles to defeat your enemy. You can give your ships time to recharge, make repairs or buy new weapons as the situation demands. The ships can be upgraded with better weapons and new types of units. These upgrades come in the form of radar, shields, damage, radar, armor, etc. Each ship can carry a certain amount of armor to keep it from being damaged. Shields, damage and radar will change based on the type of ship.

Each ship has a different weapons system. Torpedo bombers have torpedos, Torpedo bombers carry a limited amount of torpedoes. Subs have depth charges, but none when entering a harbour. Subs and Torpedo Bombers do the best job and damage. Some ships have torpedoes coming out of cannons, some have mines and some have cannons. These are usually used after the battle. The ships need weapons to do the job. Most of the weapons are limited in their use. At first you can use only one kind of weapon, but it can be upgraded with more kinds of weapons.

The controls in the game are very simple. You use WASD to move and your mouse to look around. You move by pressing X, then Y. You can move into squares and walk around. When you move into a square, it is noted on your HUD. You can also use the Mouse Wheel to zoom in and out. The controls are pretty simple, but they work well and provide a satisfying feeling when you’re fighting.
