Ubisoft just released
Dynasty Warriors 9 which absolutely blew away its predecessors and it seemed
like in like EVERY review it was mentioned for one of it’s appealing features:
Moogle combat.
Despite it’s success, many people still can’t understand why their ‘just a hack n slash’ game suddenly dropped the
cannon that it brought to the previous game. There is an answer.
But first let us get down to the point of my story.

So, i’m a faithful player of Dynasty Warriors 7. I know pretty much the whole history of the series; and even though I really liked it when it first came out, I haven’t played it since the first two installments (and no, I’m not a fanboy, I just have simply forgotten that it has existed since I’ve picked up a different series; and I have not played DW8 as well, so I’m going to compare it to DW7 as there is a similar story to this game compared to DW7).
Anyway, I’m a big fan of ‘Moogle everywhere’ and so I was thrilled to find out that the most recent game had it in it’s roster. The question is, did it make an actual impact on the game, or will it be completely overlooked in the numerous other unlocks and features that the game offers.

As with all other Dynasty Warriors games, the gameplay is heavily based on pressing buttons to do things.

Each character moves slower than your average DW character, but have their own armor and weapon set features that are different from the ones you’re used to, but still shares the same turn-based combat mechanics.

Just like with DW7, you have two different modes of battles, depending on how you make use of your attacks. The traditional one is where you do what you usually do, only you have buttons for normal attacks, charge attacks and moogles. The second one is melee-based and lets you practice Moogles anytime on the enemy.

The one thing that is different from DW7 is the base-style. You start with a katana and are allowed to upgrade it with better swords. Unlike DW7, the attack animations are actually done in a more realistic way with different animations and smears depending on how you attack and your weapon. Each weapon also has different attack zones for melee and long distance attacks. You can also set your attack length and speed.

Lives:
The length of time a player may play before being taken off-screen and losing the game. The minimum possible life you can get in your first round of the “Samurai” is one, but it’s fairly unlikely that you’ll lose your first game before then. By the 3rd round, you’ll be using your second and third lives, and by the 4th round you’ll be using your third and fourth. At this point, your performance is not really at stake. It’s very likely that by this point you’ll have your life total close to eight or more, making the point at which you start losing lives pointless. It’s only once you get to the 5th round or later that you’ll start to have to take into account your performance for matches.
Items:
These are also pretty much useless, because you can freely buy whatever suits you best. They only come into play when the enemy throws you a lifeline, and you can use them to recover yourself in dire straits. But if there’s no point to something, it’s going to be pretty useless in the first place.

Weapons:
You can choose from a variety of weapons when purchasing weapons. They all vary in range, speed, and strength, and there are three basic classes of weapon. Melee weapons don’t have any special characteristics, but will still be able to cut through armor, while gun weapons will hit people harder, and often have more range. While a weapon could be described as “better” or “worse”, it’s more likely that it will be just “different” from something else. Certain weapon classes are generally better than others, while others are less useful.
