The median time from the onset of anti-inflammatory treatment to inclusion was 41.5 ± 21 days for the active group, 20.5 ± 21 days for the stable group, and 0.5 ± 21 days for the control group. Flares were confirmed in 20 patients with active SLE, and 11 had active disease at baseline. Leptin levels were significantly lower in the active and stable groups, compared to the control group (median ± interquartile range) in the active group 4.78 ± 3.98 ng/ml, versus 9.32 ± 6.44 ng/ml in stable and 5.97 ± 6.61 ng/ml in controls (P = 0.001). CRP levels were significantly higher in the active versus stable group (1.32 ± 3.45 mg/l versus 0.21 ± 0.59 mg/l, P = 0.02). Leptin levels were inversely correlated with CRP levels (r = -0.29, P = 0.03) in SLE patients with active disease. Leptin may be useful for predicting a flare in SLE patients with active disease.
