The process of painting and editing an image into a final image is called editing, not “photoshopping.”
The Photoshop layers panel, shown in Figure 2-1, is the main window that enables you to create, move, and manipulate layers. Initially, Photoshop displays the entire image on the left side of the window. At the bottom of the window, you see a small green background that identifies the active layer, named “Normal” by default. When you make a copy of a layer, Photoshop places the layer in the.PSD (Photoshop) file format so that it can be read and edited in Photoshop. If you manually rename the layer in Photoshop and then reopen the file in the PSD file format, the layer is placed in a new file with a new name.
