Microsoft System Center Service Manager Authoring Tool allows you to extend Service Manager functionality using a management pack.
The wizard guides you through the installation, creation, and definition of a Management Pack. A Management Pack is a set of scripts that defines additional fields that extend the built-in tools of Service Manager, such as the Service Control Form or the Service Manager Configuration.
An extension adds additional functionality to the operations of the management pack.
The purpose of the management pack is to define customizations of the standard tool. We can think of it as a form or report with additional columns.
Extensions can be viewed as replacement of forms that have the same functionality.
When installing the Management Pack, you can choose to place the customizations in the existing form’s script. You can also create a separate management pack with a new script.
When using an existing management pack, the customer can still add other customizations to the management pack, such as new scripts or customizations of the SCSM configuration.
The management pack is just a management pack, and as such, you don’t have to install it as part of the System Center Service Manager installation. You can install the management pack separately, and the customizations will be added to the management pack when you install it.
Creating an extension
To create an extension, create a new management pack. At the current version, you must have System Center Service Manager and Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 installed.
