Working through Python’s JSON type

I’m having a tough time working through the JSON.parse() and/or json.loads() function.
I have a very basic web app that serves up JSON data from an external source:

I’m then trying to parse it using Python:
mydict = json.loads(data)
print mydict

This returns:

print mydict

If I change the first line to:
mydict = data

and the second line to:
print mydict

It gives me the JSON as a string:
u'{“id”:”38096270″,”name”:”Database Server”,”created_date”:”27-10-2013″}’

How do I get it to return mydict, i.e. the loaded dict?

A big sticking point has been Pakistan’s military support for some militant groups fighting the Afghan government and its Western allies.

“It has a role to play in the peace process,” said one Western diplomat.

“If we are going to engage in a peace process, there will have to be a piece to it,” he said, mentioning that non-state armed groups would have to be involved in any future talks
