Surah Al-Furqan (The Lofty) is the 114th Surah of the Quran, and contains 22 ayah (verses). The number 114 is significant in the Islamic faith, and there are 114 surahs in the Quran.[1][2] Surah Al-Furqan is named after its first verse. Surah Al-Furqan is often called Al-Kafi, because it is the first Surah of the Quran recited in congregational prayer.[3] In Turkey, Surah Al-Furqan, along with the Quran itself, is required to be memorized by all students in elementary school.[4]

Surah Al-Furqan is divided into three ayat (verses). These three ayat form a Surah of 26 verses, and they are numbered from first to last, as shown in the illustration below. The first verse of Surah Al-Furqan, the second verse of Surah Al-Furqan, and the last verse of Surah Al-Furqan are shown here.

The Quran contains many parables, or allegories, or hadiths (saying of the Prophet) that enhance the meaning of the verses. Surah Al-Furqan is no different: its first line, signified in the figure below, tells the story of Muhammad and his revelation to the mountain that he was on, and how he passed it on to his followers.

Some Muslims choose to read Surah Al-Furqan in several different ways. The figure to the left shows the chain of transmission.
