AutoCAD is a widely used integrated computer-aided design and drafting software product. It is used to create 2D and 3D drawings and is a CAM system. AutoCAD differs from other CAD applications in that users interact with AutoCAD on a single computer at a time. Local access is provided by using the main AutoCAD installation. Remote access allows users to connect to the app via the Internet, much like a cloud-based service. AutoCAD users can work from the browser, using local, networked, or cloud-based computers. The first remote access program for AutoCAD was AutoCAD Connect, introduced in 2005, and discontinued in 2014. The program was replaced by Web Access, which was then replaced by the current Web and Mobile Access. AutoCAD 2018 Web and Mobile Access is currently in development.[9]

Autodesk has supported the use of the AutoCAD model as input to a 3D printer called “AutoCAD 3D Printing” since 2014. In July 2016, Autodesk introduced a direct to model 3D printer called “Project H” which is capable of printing almost any type of 3D model without the use of a CAM software application. As of August 2018, the technology has been used to print parts for the Epson 3D Printer and the US Army’s F3D printer.

Marketing and distribution

Autodesk’s AutoCAD is available free of charge, but provides a limited license for their products, including AutoCAD LT for Windows and AutoCAD LT for Macintosh. Autodesk also distributes Autodesk Architects, a computer-based software package for architectural and engineering design, and a toolset for creating 3D models, drawings, and animations. Autodesk Architects features 2D and 3D models that are created from architectural plans and specifications. The application also incorporates building information modeling, enabling users to optimize the design and build of buildings. The application supports the creation of working drawings, floor plans, elevations, and sections and was the first Autodesk product to use 3D computer graphics for the design of construction models.

In May 2012, Autodesk acquired several software startups such as Thingmaker, Noesis, and Pro/ENGINEER and began marketing them as its creative content creation toolset.
