The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now even more concerned about the dangers of using common items as weapons.
DHS has funded a new grant program in which university researchers are encouraged to develop clever yet more easily designed weapons that could be readily obtained by nefarious characters. Under the program, the DHS is encouraging researcher to come up with the next generation of “pipe bomb”
The new initiative was announced by DHS acting undersecretary Ron Hulsey during a speech at the Allied Universities Protective Association’s national symposium in Washington, D.C., on April 23.
The DHS grant program, called Stand Down, isn’t only looking at objects that have never been used in a terrorist attack, but instead is focused on ideas that can be used to reduce the likelihood of attacks succeeding.
While the government has never previously funded research into pipe bombs – or for that matter, remote-controlled, self-firing, helium-filled, or non-explosive, intelligent “smart” bombs – Hulsey told the AUPAA conference that the United States is “not immune” to the “growing problem” of so-called “asymmetrical” warfare, in which non-state actors and even individuals increasingly use items and technology that are beyond their ability to defeat.
“These threats, from IEDs [improvised explosive devices] to attacks by lone actor extremists, are serious and growing,” Hulsey said. “Our nation is not immune to the growing problem of asymmetrical warfare.”
