JQuery: Value change in textbox on button click

I have got an issue with JQuery, I need to get the value out of a textbox which contains a string of numbers I made up in the controller. How do I do this?
jQuery(‘#text_1’).keyup(function() {
if (this.value.length == 3) {
this.value = this.value.substring(0, 2);
} else if (this.value.length!= 3) {
this.value = this.value.substring(0, 1) + ‘X’;
}
});

This works on a keyup event but the textbox has a button and I need it to work when the button is clicked, how? I tried:

but the alert only showed the original string.
