It happened at around 3:00 pm on Sunday at the Bacungan Beach community in the province, which is located more than 130 kilometres from the provincial capital, Bacolod.

Police said the landslide occurred at a secondary school compound, which is home to 40 families.

The victims included both adults and children, most of whom were buried by the landslide and were subsequently found after the disaster.

A team of government and private emergency responders, as well as the police, the military and the Bureau of Fire Protection were still conducting searches for missing people.

Authorities said that the landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall in the area.

Officials initially said 12 bodies had been recovered from the scene, but that number later rose to 40.

Resident Arnold Barrena told Philippine television network ABS-CBN that he saw people running and screaming from the school.

“As I approached, it became clearer. It was the bodies of five children and seven men, but I couldn’t identify them because they were badly buried and their face was covered.”

The landslide was described by local civil defence chief Joel Radan as “natural and unforeseeable”.

“At this time, we still need to verify what caused this natural phenomenon,” he said.

Raban said authorities suspected that the school compound was built on unstable soil.
