When the line is scaled, its length remains the same. However, the distances between points along the line will be stretched by the same factor as the line itself. For example, if a line is 10 units in length, and then scaled by a factor of four, it will now be 40 units in length. This same linear scaling affects the distances between features on the line. If the angle of the line is not scaled, then the distances between points will be stretched by the same amount as the line itself.

To avoid linear scaling, it’s necessary to keep the line angle the same when scaling, or change the length of the line. However, if the scaling factor is simply changed to 4, for example, then scaling will be achieved by stretching the distances between features rather than the features themselves. This is what the problem is with linear scaling.

The problem is only exacerbated when the line is scaled, because when the line is rotated, the distance between features can be lengthened, but the distance between features along the same line will remain the same. For example, if a line is rotated by 180 degrees, and then scaled by 4, the distances between features will be stretched by 4, but the distances between features that were at the same location along the line will not have been stretched.
