History

AutoCAD was developed by Jim Reed and Lloyd Williams. It was initially available as a shareware program costing US$295 for a single user license, which included a US$50 teacher’s discount. For US$750, one could get a “Limited User” version, which included a student’s discount and a US$100 license for a workstation, plus a copy of ETA’s CAD360.

By the end of 1983, the shareware version had sold 1,000 copies. It was during that year that Autodesk bought the Canadian firm Autodesk Corporation, with the intent of developing a new version of AutoCAD, integrating the applications and code from Autodesk Corporation’s previous products and those of other firms. The new version, AutoCAD LT, was released in 1984, still running on the DOS operating system, but later became available on the X Window System.
