They found that when participants viewed the images with fearful content, those with larger amygdala responses while viewing the scenes were more anxious than those with smaller responses. This was not the case for the neutral or pleasant content scenes.
When the researchers looked for other predictors of how an individual responded to fearful scenes, they found that a person’s history of high anxiety made a big difference. People who reported higher levels of anxiety at baseline showed larger responses in the amygdala to the fearful images than those who reported lower levels of anxiety.
This suggests that the amygdala and its connections to other parts of the brain, such as the hippocampus, may be important targets for developing treatments for anxiety, especially for those with a history of high anxiety.
The study comes at a time when scientists are trying to identify brain mechanisms and pathways that may cause or contribute to the development of anxiety, and the researchers note that this study shows a possible connection between how the brain processes fearful stimuli and how anxious someone is at baseline.
