A university student, Dave Winer, who went on to found the group that became the web’s first web browser, accessed a prototype version of AutoCAD at the SVA while studying under John Walker at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.
AutoCAD was initially released in 1982 as a desktop application running on a number of microcomputer platforms, including the Commodore PET, Apple II, and IBM PC, and it ran on mainframe computer systems as well. In 1987, software was released for Windows 3.1. The last version of AutoCAD for the Apple Macintosh was released in 2001, and the last version of AutoCAD for Windows was released in 2005.
The AutoCAD software is also distributed as a Web application. The first version of the Web application was released in 2001.
